𐌱𐍉𐌺𐍉𐍃 𐌹𐍆𐍄𐌵𐌼𐌰 (Codex Next) is a stylish sans serif typeface family that combines Latin and Gothic influences. In this case, rather than referring to blackletter or sans serif typefaces, the term “Gothic” refers specifically to the alphabet created by Bishop Wulfila (𐌿𐌻𐍆𐌹𐌻𐌰) in the 4th century and immortalized in the Codex Argenteus commissioned by Theoderic the Great (𐌸𐌹𐌳𐌰𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃) in the 6th century. In designing Codex Next, the question was asked, what if Theoderic (AD 454–526) would have been successful in his attempt to create an Italo-Gothic hybrid culture centered in Ravenna, Italy? Codex Next represents a cross-pollination between the Latin and Gothic alphabets similar to Peter Behrens’s Antiqua designed ca. 1908. The difference is, Codex Next is designed to be highly legible and capable of bilingual typesetting from small text to large-scale wayfinding signage systems.
